(An ongoing project )
Sonic Remains is a sound art project rooted in archival recovery and field recording, documenting and reactivating the sonic life of Khartoum between 2011 to 2025, a very complicated fourteen-year period in which Sudan moved through division, uprising, revolution, military coup, war, and an ongoing displacement crisis.
Drawing on sounds extracted from radio broadcasts, internet and social media, private cassette collections, and pre-war field recordings, each track is geolocated on an interactive map accompanied by annotations, historical context, and personal memories, creating an alternative, multi-layered narrative of a city at a crossroads, weaving past and present into a living sonic memory.
I started this project in 2021 during my residency at The Muse Multi Studios under the theme: "A Decaying bank: Reproducing Khartoum Visually.
